Base
Coinbase's Ethereum Layer 2, a low-cost, developer-friendly chain that is the default launchpad for most new onchain apps and AI-agent activity.
Base is an Ethereum Layer 2 built by Coinbase for cheap, fast, developer-friendly onchain apps. In February 2026 it began moving off the shared OP Stack to its own consolidated base/base stack to ship faster and reduce developer overhead, and its stated 2026 focus is onchain markets, stablecoin payments, and growing its developer ecosystem, including tooling for AI-driven apps that interact with those markets.
The Coinbase Developer Platform gives you the higher-level surfaces that make Base practical: Base Account with passkeys and paymaster-sponsored (gasless) transactions, OnchainKit React components, Mini Apps, and account abstraction via ERC-4337.
Why builders care
Base is where the largest share of real agent and app activity is settling right now, and much of the web4 stack sits on top of it: Virtuals, x402, and Eliza plugins all target Base. Low fees and gasless UX mean the app you build is something people will actually use, not just admire.
