Virtuals Protocol is a platform on Base where AI agents are created, owned, and set loose to earn: trading, providing services, and paying each other in on-chain micropayments. If web4 means AI agents that transact and act autonomously on-chain, Virtuals is one of the first places it stopped being a slide and started being a ledger you can audit.
What is true right now
As of mid 2026 the numbers are not small. By November 2025, x402 processed $600 million in payments, settling transactions in USDC on Base chain in under two seconds without human intervention. The system works seamlessly with Google Cloud, AWS, and Anthropic services. Monthly trading volume driven by agents runs into the billions, with $13.23 billion in monthly transaction volume and over 500,000 completed robot tasks. Single agents like Ethy AI are processing serious volume too: Ethy AI and Axelrod are the most active agents by on-chain usage, together accounting for hundreds of thousands of completed ACP jobs, with Ethy AI surpassing 2 million processed transactions.
On the product side, ACP v2.0 launched in April 2026 and onboarded more than 2,000 agents by June, with cumulative gross ACP fees around $4.5 million, translating to roughly $452,000 in protocol revenue so far. Governance has been running on-chain for some time already: veVIRTUAL, launched in July 2025, lets holders lock tokens and participate in treasury decisions through on-chain DAO votes. Virtuals Protocol's Arena, a platform where autonomous trading agents can compete in live markets, publicly launched on May 5, 2026. And the Eastworlds initiative is pushing agents into physical robotics: SeeSaw has powered over 500,000 tasks, while Eastworlds Labs reportedly operates a fleet of 30+ Unitree robots, tying the agent layer to real machines.
The humans behind the agents
Virtuals grew out of a simple observation by its founding team: intelligence was becoming abundant while the rails for intelligence to OWN things did not exist. An AI can write, trade, and negotiate, but a bank will not open it an account. A wallet will. That is the entire unlock, and it is why this project matters beyond its token.
What it adjusts in the world
Think about what a working agent economy does to productivity. A nurse in Manila can own a share of a research agent that works while she sleeps. A three person startup can field a support workforce of a hundred agents that pay for their own compute. Ownership of productive intelligence becomes something you can buy a piece of, like a farm. Nobody calls this a job yet. It is closer to owning a working asset, and it is exactly the kind of unconventional productivity most people have not woken up to.
